Alstom Reaches Significant Milestone with the Delivery of Five Hundred Electric Locomotives to Indian Railways, Empowering India’s Sustainable Freight and Infrastructure Growth: Latest Update

Alstom, a global frontrunner in sustainable mobility solutions, has successfully delivered 500 electric locomotives to Indian Railways, marking a pivotal achievement in the modernisation of India’s rail infrastructure. This milestone highlights Alstom’s steadfast dedication to transforming India’s freight transportation sector in line with the nation’s ambitious growth targets.

The momentous event took place at Alstom’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Madhepura, Bihar, where the 500th India-made Prima T8 WAG12B e-locomotive was flagged off. The ceremony was attended by distinguished officials, including Mr. Manish Kumar, Chief Administrative Officer of Indian Railways, alongside senior representatives from Alstom.

As part of a €3.5 billion contract, Alstom is supplying a total of 800 high-powered, double-section Prima T8 locomotives, each with a formidable 12,000 HP (9 MW) capacity. These WAG-12B locomotives are designed to transport freight, capable of hauling up to 6,000-tonne rakes with a maximum speed of 120 km/h. To ensure maximum operational uptime and reduce maintenance costs, Alstom has also established cutting-edge maintenance depots in Saharanpur and Nagpur, equipped with predictive technologies for enhanced reliability.

Built under a Joint Venture between Alstom and Indian Railways, the Madhepura facility represents one of India’s largest integrated greenfield manufacturing plants. This facility stands as a testament to India’s growing manufacturing capabilities, with a production capacity of 120 locomotives annually. As of now, Alstom has achieved nearly 90% localisation in the production process, contributing significantly to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Over 85% of the components used in these locomotives are sourced locally, reinforcing the nation’s manufacturing prowess and positioning India as a leader in the global locomotive industry.

These advanced locomotives are already transforming India’s freight network, having covered over 120 million kilometres, transporting critical goods such as coal, cement, food grains, fertilisers, petrochemicals, and minerals across the country. The WAG-12B locomotives are equipped with cutting-edge Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) propulsion technology, which enables efficient energy consumption, regenerative braking, and smoother acceleration. This technology not only reduces operational costs but also mitigates the impact of traction noise and heat generation, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient rail system.

For over a century, Alstom has been a key player in India’s rail sector, consistently supporting the country’s journey toward sustainable mobility. Alstom’s diverse range of services and solutions continues to drive India’s rail revolution, from freight transport to passenger services, solidifying its role as a strategic partner in the nation’s transportation and infrastructure development.
