Tomar, Portugal Sees A Surge In Tourism As Almost Two Hundred Thousand People Explore Its Museums And Monuments

Tomar, Portugal records nearly two hundred thousand visitors to its cultural sites, marking a powerful surge in tourism and growing global interest in its heritage.
Tomar’s Municipal Monuments Attract Nearly 200,000 Visitors in 2024
Cultural sites managed by the municipality of Tomar recorded a notable rise in visitors in 2024, with a nearly 7% increase compared to the previous year. The total number of entries reached 195,540, reflecting growing interest in the city’s heritage—excluding the renowned Convent of Christ, which is managed separately.
In comparison, 2023, which featured the quadrennial Festa dos Tabuleiros, drew 182,126 visitors, while 2022 saw 134,071 entries to municipal cultural spaces.
Of the 195,540 people who visited these facilities in 2024, 57.49% (112,408) were from Portugal, and 42.51% (83,132) were international tourists. Among foreign visitors, the United States led the way, contributing 21.52%, followed by Spain (14.62%), France (11.98%), and Brazil (9.89%).
The Tomar City Council highlighted these figures as a strong indicator of rising tourism in the city, noting that the growth occurred independently of the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose 2024 statistics have yet to be released. However, officials have confirmed that last year’s attendance at the monument will surpass the 311,879 visitors it received in 2023.
Within the municipal network, the Synagogue remained the top attraction, welcoming 47,841 visitors, of whom 28,943 were from abroad. The Synagogue’s Interpretive Center followed the same trend, attracting 27,096 people, with over half (15,336) being international visitors.
The Chapel of Santa Iria ranked second overall, with 31,261 visits, mostly from Portuguese tourists (20,942). The Levada Cultural Complex—which includes museums such as the Foundry and Power Plant Centers, the Tomar Templário Interpretive Center, and Moagem A Portuguesa—accounted for 20.9% of all visits, drawing a total of 40,848 people across its various exhibits.
These figures point to Tomar’s growing appeal as a cultural destination, supported by a rich mix of historic sites and contemporary initiatives that continue to engage both local and global audiences.
