South Korea, Taiwan and China lead the charge as Northeast Asia’s online travel market is set to surpass thirty billion dollars by 2026, driving unprecedented growth.

Northeast Asia is poised to exceed $30 billion in annual online travel bookings by 2026, marking a significant milestone in the region’s travel industry, according to Phocuswright. The Phocuswright Northeast Asia Travel Market Report 2023-2027 highlights key factors driving this growth, including emerging demand, demographic shifts, and strategic changes that will reshape travel patterns over the next decade.

As the region transitions from recovery to strong growth, total online travel bookings are expected to see substantial increases through 2027. Against this dynamic backdrop, WiT Japan & North Asia will return to Tokyo on May 26-27 for its 12th edition. The event takes place in a country that has become Asia’s most-visited destination in 2024, surpassing Thailand. Japan welcomed 36.87 million international visitors in 2023 and is targeting 60 million by 2030.

The North Asian markets, particularly South Korea, Taiwan, and China, are driving this growth. South Korea’s outbound travel stood out in 2024, with South Korean travelers averaging 0.56 outbound trips per year, the highest in Asia. More than 30% of these travelers chose Japan as their primary destination. Taiwanese travelers, making an average of 0.51 trips annually, follow closely behind, with approximately 26% visiting Japan.
