New East Security Checkpoint Opens at Denver International Airport, Streamlining Passenger Flow and Security

The second phase of its advanced security checkpoint has now been officially completed for Denver International Airport (DEN), a major step in the airport on-going improvements through its Great Hall Program. A first of a kind announcement, heavily touted today by key leaders including US Representative Diana DeGette and Denver Mayor Michael Hancock represents a major step forward in passenger security and airport process improvement. The East Security Checkpoint on Level 6 will officially open for travelers on August 5 beginning at 3 a.m. for an enhanced airport experience.
Key Changes Effective August 5
Travelers arriving at Denver International Airport will notice significant updates starting August 5:
- Security Checkpoint Locations: All security checkpoints are now positioned on the north end of Level 6, directly opposite the Hotel and Transit Center. The South Security Checkpoint will be shut down permanently.
- Walkway to Concourse A: The newly opened walkway and bridge to Concourse A will be accessible for both arriving and departing passengers. However, departing travelers must pass through security before using the walkway.
- Exit Process for Arrivals: Arriving passengers using the walkway will exit via automated lanes, with elevators at doors 600 (west side) and 601 (east side) offering easy access to baggage claim and ground transportation on Level 5.
Both the East and West Security Checkpoints are equipped with 17 screening lanes each, featuring the latest security technology to expedite the passenger screening process. These enhancements will facilitate a smoother, more efficient journey for passengers traveling through Denver International Airport.
Upgraded Technology to Enhance Security and Efficiency
As part of the \$2.1 billion Great Hall Program, the new East Security Checkpoint is designed to provide an enhanced security screening process. Notable technological advancements include:
- Multiple Passenger Screening: New systems allow multiple passengers to place their items in bins simultaneously, reducing bottlenecks and speeding up the process.
- Advanced Carry-On Screening: Passengers can now leave liquids (3.4 oz or less) and electronics like laptops in their carry-on bags, thanks to enhanced screening technology.
- Prohibited Item Detection: The new system automatically diverts bags containing prohibited items, allowing other passengers’ items to continue through the screening process without delay.
- RFID Technology: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are attached to each bin to ensure greater accountability for a passenger’s carry-on property.
- Automated Bin Returns: The bins will automatically return to the front of the line once the passenger has finished with them, keeping the process moving smoothly.
Enhanced Security and Accessibility Features
Passengers utilizing the East and West Security Checkpoints should be prepared for the following:
- ID Preparation: Have your REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification ready for verification at the checkpoint.
- Bin Usage: All personal items must be placed in bins, including suitcases, backpacks, and roller bags. Larger bags may require multiple bins. For optimal use of space, place lighter items like jackets at the bottom of the bin.
- Efficient Walkthrough: TSA PreCheck passengers can keep their shoes on, and liquids and electronics can remain in carry-ons, simplifying the screening process.
- Stay Informed: Once your items are in the bin, do not remove the bin from the conveyor belt. The bins will automatically return to the front for the next passenger.
Phases and Future Improvements
The opening of the East Security Checkpoint marks the completion of the second phase of the Great Hall Program, which was completed five months ahead of schedule and \$10 million under budget. The entire project is slated for completion by the close of 2027, with significant upgrades scheduled for phased openings throughout the duration.
The upcoming significant development is the launch of eight additional standard security lanes in late summer 2026, situated at the north end of Level 5. These new lanes will facilitate a smoother transition for international passengers, enabling quicker access to the concourses. Along with these lanes, new escalators and stairs will be introduced, enhancing access to baggage claim and ground transportation on Level 5.
East Security CheckpointOpensInnovative technology, a more efficient experience Denver International Airport (DEN) is one step closer to delivering on its promise of enhancing the passenger travel experience with the opening today of the East Security Checkpoint. This will deliver a better security experience for DEN passengers and allow them to move more quickly onto their flights. It will further support the airport in achieving its goal to be one of the busiest and most efficient hubs in the U.S., with ongoing developments through the Great Hall Program.
