Morocco enhances its high-speed rail with Weighwell Engineering’s advanced train weighing system, ensuring safety, precision, and operational excellence for millions of travelers.

Weighwell Engineering Ltd has installed a cutting-edge train weighing system in Morocco for Africa’s first high-speed rail network. This advanced technology enhances safety and efficiently addresses specific operational requirements.

The PTW 500-VB2X was selected due to its lightweight and portable design, offering a customizable solution that can easily adapt to varying needs through its ptwX software, which displays precise weighing data.

This innovative system detects weight imbalances, improving safety during daily train operations. It also consistently provides accurate measurements for wheels, axles, and the total vehicle weight.

The static system was installed in Tangiers, Morocco, for immediate use. Initially, it will measure the weight of Alstom TGV Duplex trains, playing a crucial role in the maintenance process.

Société Marocaine de Maintenance manages the fleet under a $183.75 million, 15-year agreement between ONCF and SNCF. This partnership ensures high-quality maintenance for the trains.

These high-speed trains will primarily operate between Tangiers and Casablanca, serving millions of passengers annually. The route is expected to carry around 10 million travelers per year, significantly reducing travel time.

The journey between the two cities will now take just over two hours, enhancing connectivity and attracting more passengers to this efficient route.

Morocco officially inaugurated the Tangier high-speed train depot on September 20, with high-speed services set to commence once static commissioning and rigorous testing are completed.

Paul Horsfall, Managing Director of Weighwell, highlighted the company’s global reach, with their systems currently operating in over 25 countries. He emphasized their ability to adapt and create tailored solutions for international markets.
