Hong Kong Rises to Challenge Singapore in Major Event Hosting, Reveals Rosanna Law in Exclusive Interview

In an exclusive interview with the Post earlier this week, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, the Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, emphasized the proactive efforts of the authorities to draw major events. She admitted that Singapore might seem more upfront in attracting prominent events, but highlighted that officials in Hong Kong, including herself, are actively involved in their own initiatives. She described how they personally connect with leading organizers of concerts and sports events to discuss potential opportunities.

Law pointed out that Hong Kong’s distinctive strategic benefit lies in its geographical position, allowing access to half of the global population within a five-hour flight.

The minister emphasized a tourism development approach for the city that focuses on quality and sustainability rather than merely increasing visitor numbers.

In the early to mid-2010s, Hong Kong experienced a wave of protests against parallel trading, driven by the discontent of locals over the influx of mainland Chinese tourists who were heavy spenders.

This increase in tourists boosted Hong Kong’s tourism and retail industries to new heights, but it also put pressure on infrastructure and escalated tensions among the local populace.

Towns on the border like Sheung Shui and Tuen Mun felt the impact acutely, with an increase in congestion and a surge in stores tailored to meet the demands of mainland tourists for beauty and personal care items.

Law pointed out that these dynamics influenced her decision to keep the tourism sector’s contribution to Hong Kong’s total GDP below 5 percent, noting that in 2023, it stood at 2.6 percent.

Law emphasized the significant impact of the tourism industry on Hong Kong’s economy, not only in terms of its contribution to the GDP but also as a crucial provider of jobs.

“Mega-events and tourism significantly contribute to job creation, especially for workers with fewer skills.

“Thus, a thriving tourism sector translates into substantially increased employment opportunities.”

Law emphasized the main elements of Hong Kong’s second tourism development blueprint, unveiled in December. This included leveraging support from the central government, such as the multiple-entry visa program and the individual visit scheme.
