Emirates Marks 25 Years of Expanding Sydney’s Global Connectivity with Daily Flights to London, Manchester, Barcelona, and More

Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, is marking 25 years of connecting to Sydney. Since launching its services to the city in March 2000 with just four weekly flights via Singapore, Emirates now operates three daily direct flights between Dubai and Sydney. These flights link Australians to over 140 destinations worldwide.
To date, Emirates has transported more than nine million passengers to and from Sydney, operating over 35,000 flights.
Emirates operates three daily services from Sydney, using its flagship four-class A380 aircraft, connecting travelers to major destinations in its global network such as London, Manchester, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan, Dublin, Rome, Athens, Paris, and Beirut.
Notable Milestones
Emirates remains committed to providing unparalleled connectivity and a world-class travel experience for passengers flying to and from Sydney, reinforcing its dedication to one of the airline’s most strategically vital markets.
In August 2003, Emirates launched its first direct service between Dubai and Christchurch via Sydney, connecting Australians with New Zealand on the airline’s widebody aircraft. The success of this route led to the introduction of the A380 on the Trans-Tasman flight in October 2016, offering passengers the exclusive opportunity to travel across the Tasman Sea on an A380.
In February 2006, Emirates opened its dedicated Sydney Airport Lounge, offering a luxurious retreat for First and Business Class passengers before their flights. This lounge is one of four Emirates lounges in Australia, part of the airline’s global network of nearly 40 lounges worldwide.
In 2022, Sydney was among the first cities in Emirates’ network to receive the new Premium Economy cabin on its refurbished A380s, as part of the airline’s extensive retrofit program. The success of this service led to the addition of extra flights: one additional daily service from Sydney, two from Melbourne, and one from Brisbane.
In 2023, Emirates upgraded its operations to feature all-A380 services, offering over 20,300 weekly seats between Sydney and Dubai. This expansion provided more options for passengers, along with access to its award-winning Premium Economy, upgraded cabins, and enhanced interiors.
Emirates recently partnered with Sydney Airport to offer an exclusive Premium Check-In service, Ascent, for its First Class passengers, ensuring a seamless and VIP check-in experience.
Beyond product and service innovations, Emirates has shown its dedication to Sydney and Australia through strategic sponsorships. Since 2002, the airline has supported the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, providing fans with a global connection to exceptional artists and musicians, reflecting its strong commitment to arts and culture worldwide.
Barry Brown, Divisional Vice President Australasia at Emirates says, “Sydney is such an iconic city, it’s no wonder that it remains one of our top destinations from Dubai, with over 15,000 passengers flying to and from Sydney with Emirates each week.
“Over the years, Emirates has responded to growing travel demand with agility, by boosting capacity into Sydney from four-weekly to three-daily direct services and offering more travellers the opportunity to experience the city’s fantastic beaches, stunning harbour and beautiful coastline.
“As we look ahead, we will continue to elevate the customer experience in line with the ever-changing travel trends, bringing industry-leading products to Australia and continuing to offer seamless connectivity to Dubai and beyond.”
