UK Issues Powerful Travel Alert Urging British Tourists in Spain to Stay Alert as Street Crime Soars and Scammers Target holiday makers and Rentals

UK warns tourists in Spain as street crime surges and scammers target holidaymakers and rentals—travelers urged to stay vigilant and alert.
British tourists heading to Spain are being urged to take extra safety precautions following newly updated travel advice from the UK Foreign Office. One of the key recommendations includes downloading an essential security app designed to assist travellers across most parts of the country.
The alert emphasizes a growing concern over street crime in popular Spanish destinations. The free app, available nationwide except in the Basque Country and Catalonia, offers real-time support and information for visitors navigating unfamiliar areas, according to a report by The Mirror.
In addition to concerns about pickpocketing and other petty crimes, British travellers are being warned about an uptick in roadside scams. The Majorca Daily Bulletin notes a rise in incidents involving so-called “highway pirates” — criminals who target vehicles with foreign license plates, especially rental cars and those towing caravans.
These scammers often attempt to wave down drivers by pretending there’s a mechanical issue or accusing them of causing damage. If stopped, they may use the opportunity to rob unsuspecting tourists.
Authorities advise drivers not to stop unless they are in a well-lit, public area such as a service station. Any offers of help from strangers should be treated with caution, especially if they appear overly persistent or aggressive.
Another growing tactic involves impersonation of law enforcement. Tourists are urged to be wary of individuals claiming to be police officers while driving unmarked vehicles. Legitimate officers from Spain’s traffic police will always be in uniform, and unmarked police cars will display an electronic sign that reads “Policia” or “Guardia Civil.”
While genuine officers may ask to see your vehicle’s documents, they will never request your wallet, bag, or other personal items.
The updated travel advice follows increasing unrest in some Spanish cities, which have seen rising tensions linked to overtourism in scenic and historic hotspots. Local sentiment has shifted in certain regions, prompting protests and discussions around tourist regulations as the country braces for another busy holiday season.
For those planning a visit, the UK Foreign Office continues to recommend staying informed, remaining vigilant, and using official safety resources to ensure a secure and enjoyable trip.
