Antarctica Kayaking

HX Expeditions will soon relaunch to develop the world’s largest Antarctica kayaking and camping program for the 2025-26 season. Beginning in October 2025, the service will offer a never-before-equaled 188 percent increase in kayaking capacity, doubling the number of camping sites available and accommodating 60 guests a night. This is a significant step towards introducing intimate, environmentally responsible adventures to the Antarctic.

The move, spearheaded by Karin Strand, HX VP of Expeditions Development, is more than just a question of augmented capacity. HX is on a mission to redefine the way travelers visit Antarctica, taking exploration of what was once the world’s greatest unknown region to a new level, immersing travelers in the stunning and remote environment in the most 360° and sustainable way, said Strand. The itinerary follows the strict guidelines of IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators; HX is a founding member) in favor of environmentally responsible tourism.

Increased Kayaking Spaces and Solo Traveller Access

To make the region more accessible to those who are always up for an adventure, HX Expeditions is introducing some major changes for 2025-26. The program offers two different kinds of kayaking:

  • Discovery Kayaks (Inflatable) – For the more independent at heart, these inflatable kayaks give you a closer, more exclusive taste of what it has to offer. These kayaks are low to the water and a great choice for flatwater paddling. These kayaks are for one person, and communication is not a problem since you don’t need a guide.
  • Sea Explorer Kayaks (Hard Shell) – Our hard-shell kayaks are guided by two professional sea kayak guides. They are built for longer paddles and to take on the more dynamic Antarctic conditions. Sea Explorer kayaks are made for the paddler who wants to travel further and experience one of the most beautiful regions of the world with safety and capability factored in.

With these options, guests will now have more freedom in how they explore the Antarctic wilderness, and solo travelers can now join without needing a travel partner, Strand said. This makes Antarctica more reachable for independent adventurers who want to explore on their own.

Sustainable New Camping Possibilities

HX’s camping program is also seeing big changes. The company has announced Bivvy Bag Camping, a lightweight, low-impact camping style that will allow guests to sleep under the Antarctic stars. This alternative is meant to limit environmental and ecological damage, while offering an experience close to nature. The Bivvy Bags are ideal for minimalist travelers looking for an exceptional and green polar camping experience.

In addition to Bivvy bags, HX also has other more traditional camping options available. Capacities have doubled, meaning even more guests will have the opportunity to take in the breathtaking Antarctic surroundings, while overnight camping spots have the capacity for up to 60 guests each night.

New Activities for Adventurers

For those wanting a more in-depth adventure than kayaking and camping, HX is broadening the activity mix for the 2025-26 season. New experiences include:

  • Snowshoeing – Enjoy tramping across the frozen landscape on snowshoes, an ideal way to cover more ground than hiking with even greater opportunity for appreciation of the Antarctic wilderness.
  • Polar Plunge – An exhilarating leap into the frigid Antarctic waters, for the unforgettable challenge.
  • Long Hikes – Those looking for extended, strenuous hikes into the interior of the continent will be thrilled!

Strand says the program’s emphasis on small, intimate groups offers a way for guests to experience these activities in a non-consumptive, sustainable manner. The heightened choice and range of activities mean all guests will have a truly individualized experience in addition to being environmentally conscious.

Real-Time Flexibility and Onboard Management

HX Expeditions has introduced a live management system for all bookings, allowing all kayaking and camping to be flexible with the weather and guests’ wishes. This methodology allows for activities to be adapted to the very specific conditions in the Antarctic. Since its first-served system for most sailings, guests can have freedom to decide at what time to join the kayaking and camping experiences onboard.

For future seasons, they’re also working on a pre-booking system so teams can plan and coordinate in advance. Still, for the 2025-26 winter season, flexibility is likely to be a hallmark of the experience, with the elements — specifically, the weather — playing a role in many of the offerings.

Opening Up the Last Continent to Travelers

Because HX’s kayaking and camping project is more than about growing numbers — it’s about extending access to the polar regions to a broader group of travelers. Grounded in sustainable travel, low guide-to-guest ratios, and a variety of activities, HX seeks to create bucket-list activities to usher in the next generation of adventure travelers from the world over.

“With increased accessibility and flexibility to the Antarctic, we’re enabling more adventurers to experience the beauty of these incredible landscapes, without impacting the White Continent itself,” Strand added. “We are permitting more visitors to encounter the raw beauty of Antarctica while also making sure they do it responsibly.”

HX Expeditions’ responsible tourism efforts, such as fully supporting IAATO’s guidelines, prove that exploration and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. By opening up access to this one-of-a-kind part of the world, HX is contributing to developing a new breed of eco-conscious tourism consumers eager to experience the Antarctic in a low-impact way.
