LNER Funding Helps Create South Yorkshire Wildlife Haven

A stretch of land near Doncaster, sandwiched between the M18 and an industrial estate, has been transformed into a thriving wildlife haven thanks to funding from LNER. The Parson’s Carr Nature Reserve, a 104-hectare site previously used for arable farming, is now home to a wide range of insects, mammals, and bird species, revitalizing the environment and providing a new green space for local communities.

Revitalizing Parson’s Carr Nature Reserve

With the support of the LNER Customer and Community Investment Fund (CCIF), Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has been able to introduce several key features to Parson’s Carr. Among these improvements are 650 meters of hedgerow and a new wildlife corridor that will provide a safe habitat for various species, including dragonflies, marsh harriers, and brown hares. The introduction of three new ponds, along with additional grassland and crop planting, further enhances the site’s biodiversity, offering critical support for birds like turtle doves, yellowhammers, and grey partridges.

The transformation of Parson’s Carr has not only benefited wildlife but also the local community. The funding from LNER has enabled Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to offer seasonal nature walks, allowing local residents and visitors to experience the site. Benches and interpretation panels have been installed at the reserve, making the space more accessible and informative for all who visit.

A Sustainable Project with Lasting Benefits

Rachael Wilson, Community Investment Manager at LNER, praised the project’s impact, noting that Parson’s Carr is a “remarkable site” where nature thrives despite its urban surroundings. “The project’s ambition to benefit both the environment and the local community echoes our own ambition to deliver positive and sustainable change across our business,” said Wilson. “We’re proud to be involved in the regeneration of this area and helping to bring wildlife back to Doncaster.”

Sophie Pinder, Reserve Manager at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, emphasized the long-term benefits of the project. “Thanks to generous funding from LNER, more wildlife will find a welcoming home here as we make improvements to the reserve and habitats,” Pinder said. “Alongside neighbouring reserves like Potteric Carr, we’re delighted to provide wildlife and people with a network of attractive green spaces to enjoy here in the heart of Doncaster.”

A Green Space for Doncaster

Parson’s Carr Nature Reserve is part of a broader initiative to create a network of green spaces across Doncaster, offering both environmental benefits and community value. The project not only contributes to the local ecosystem but also enhances the well-being of local residents by providing easy access to nature and outdoor activities. The transformation of this once-utilized land demonstrates the power of community-focused environmental regeneration, thanks to the collaboration between LNER and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
