Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Sets New Records in Q1, Handling More Than 13.6 Million Passengers

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has made a significant mark in the first quarter of this year by setting a new record, handling over 13.6 million passengers. This achievement highlights the airport’s growing role as a major hub for both domestic and international travel. The surge in passenger traffic can be attributed to a variety of factors, including improved infrastructure, increased connectivity, and a strong rebound in travel demand post-pandemic. This milestone showcases the airport’s efficiency and capacity to cater to a rapidly expanding air travel market.
Despite a tough global and local aviation landscape, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has shown strong performance in the first quarter of FY 2025-26, handling more than 13.6 million passengers from April to June 2025. The highest passenger traffic in a single day during this period occurred on May 30, 2025, with 161,603 passengers.

Despite challenges like regional airspace restrictions, political factors, temporary closures in the Middle East, and a brief decline in passenger sentiment due to recent aviation incidents, CSMIA kept its operations running smoothly and maintained its position as one of India’s top international hubs.
In the first quarter of FY 2024–25, the airport achieved a total of 82,369 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), marking a 1.3% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects the airport’s ability to handle a steady rise in air traffic, showcasing its operational capacity. The growth in ATMs highlights an ongoing upward trend in demand for air travel, particularly during the early months of the year.
International ATMs saw an even more significant increase, growing by 3.3% over the quarter. This suggests a stronger recovery in international travel as airlines continue to expand their networks and passengers return to long-haul flights. The rise in international movements underscores the airport’s importance as a key hub for global connectivity and reflects confidence in the resumption of international travel.
The peak day for the quarter occurred on 30 April 2025, when the airport recorded 989 ATMs in a single day. This high volume is indicative of both the airport’s efficiency and the increasing demand for air travel. Managing such a large number of movements in one day highlights the airport’s capability to operate at high capacity while maintaining safety and operational standards.

The quarter saw a notable increase in passenger traffic during the summer holiday season, highlighting CSMIA’s ability to handle peak travel times as one of the region’s busiest airports.
In the first quarter, the most popular domestic destinations from CSMIA were Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. On the international front, top destinations included Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and London. The Middle East had the highest share of international departures, accounting for 48%, followed by the Asia-Pacific region at 30%, and Europe at 14%.
Expanding its global network, CSMIA welcomed new international airline partners Air Astana and Royal Jordanian Airlines, which began operations in April and June 2025, respectively. These additions connect Mumbai to the Middle East and CIS regions. CSMIA also launched new routes to Amman and Almaty, alongside enhanced domestic connections to Porbandar, Gaya, and Amravati. With 54 international and 67 domestic destinations now accessible via 51 airlines, CSMIA provides passengers with more travel options and convenience.
In line with its Digital First approach, CSMIA introduced the new Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) this quarter. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to enhance the airport’s operational capabilities, providing real-time data and insights for smoother management of airport operations. With this upgrade, CSMIA is better equipped to handle the increasing demands of modern air travel.
Another key digital upgrade was the expanded use of DigiYatra, a biometric-based digital system aimed at simplifying the passenger journey. This allows passengers to seamlessly pass through various checkpoints using facial recognition, reducing wait times and making the travel experience more convenient. The increased adoption of DigiYatra is a significant step toward creating a more streamlined and efficient airport experience.
Additionally, CSMIA introduced new e-gates, self-check-in kiosks, and self-baggage drop systems across the terminal. These advancements enable passengers to complete essential processes independently, reducing the need for manual interventions and accelerating check-in and baggage handling. As a result, passengers experience less congestion and more control over their travel experience.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport set a new record in Q1, handling over 13.6 million passengers. This growth reflects the airport’s enhanced infrastructure, expanded connectivity, and the surge in travel demand post-pandemic. The achievement underscores its role as a key global travel hub.
Overall, these digital innovations are designed to significantly boost operational efficiency while simultaneously enhancing the overall passenger experience. By embracing technology, CSMIA is paving the way for a future where travel is faster, smoother, and more convenient for everyone.
