In a game-changing pivot of travel connections in the region, Delta Airlines today became the first carrier to operate nonstop service between New York City’s John F. Bridging Cultures And Destinations

The new line on the map is not just for show, but a new connection between the two dynamic geographies — regions whose economies and cultures are increasingly intertwined. For travelers, it provides unprecedented access to one of South America’s most enchanting destinations. Until now, travelers from Utah and neighboring states had longer layovers or more convoluted options of getting to Peru. Now, with a continual daily flight, travelling times have been cut and accessibility significantly enhanced. It also enables convenient one-stop service to Lima from many western cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Portland and Las Vegas, turning Salt Lake City into a convenient hub for travel.

A Strategic Move In Aviation

From an aviation standpoint, the route is a demonstration of Delta’s broader strategy of international expansion. Salt Lake City has always been an important hub in Delta’s domestic system. Wiith as many as 265 daily departures and a newly expanded Concourse A, SLC is a great place to use as a launch pad to destinations around the world. This transcontinental service marks the first nonstop between SLC and South America — a strong start in a yet untapped market.

The 767-300ER will be used for the route, featuring four classes that appeal to a diverse customer base. With the extended range and fuel efficiency of the aircraft, plus the futureproofing of delivering a competitive premium service offering on a long-haul international flight, the Dreamliner is the obvious aircraft choice to optimize this 4,500-mile route.

And the route is complemented by Delta’s partnership with LATAM Airlines that offers connecting service to dozens of South American destinations from Lima, including São Paulo, Santiago and Buenos Aires. This alliance significantly increases Delta’s presence in Africa and offers easy, convenient connection opportunities to and from its route network.

Economic Opportunity Takes Flight

Salt Lake City, a perennial up-and-comer in U.S. business and tech development, has much to gain from increased trade, tourism revenue, cultural exchange — you know the drill. The service bolsters Utah’s connection to South America markets enhancing two way trade opportunities while also opening new opportunities to businesses considering entre to or expansion across borders.

For Peru, the path provides a new chance to bring investment and visits from the Western and Key West United States, previously under-served by South America. Now that there is a direct link in the air, each country can expect new inundations of people, goods and ideas.

Local officials have also celebrated the route’s potential impact on the state’s Latin American community. “If you really think about it, Salt Lake City is where the world connects, and this service creates even more synergy between a thriving economy and our expanded multicultural outreach,” said Bill Wyatt, Executive Director for the Salt Lake City Department of Airports.
